This page is a gateway to my collection of web pages which are based around my personal and professional interests. Use the links at the bottom of this page to navigate your way around my other web pages. The Personal Interests link will take you to some of my pages on scuba diving, guitar, some photo collections, etc. Beyond the Professional Interests lies information about my academic profile and research interests, publications, etc. Use the Site Map to find what you want, fast! <----This photo of me was taken in late 1999.

My weekdays are generally spent working in a lab doing research for my PhD. I try and make to most of my free time so on weekends I am usually scuba diving, or playing my guitar, rock climbing, cycling, swimming, or....just about anything - as long as it gets me out of the house!
<----This photo shows me doing two things fairly typical of me - scuba diving and showing off!

My PhD research involved studying the kinetic prperties of ion-intercalation electrodes at elevated temperatures. I am specifically studying sol-gel deposited mixed tungsten-titanium oxide electrochromic films. What does all that mean? I have some thin films deposited on glass substrates which change colour when I apply a small voltage across the film. These films can therefore be used to make windows which may be made to change colour when you please. These glazing devices are sometimes called 'Smart Windows' because they can be used to control the amount of heat and light which enters a building, in order to optimise energy efficiency. If the building is more energy efficient it can reduce the amount of electricity it needs for heating, cooling and lighting. Reducing electricity consumption lowers the amount of coal burned in power stations and so Smart Windows may be used in the future to make buildings more efficient and therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
